As part of Area-Based Development under the Chennai Smart City Mission, the Greater Chennai Corporation converted 1,772 sodium-vapour streetlights to SCADA-monitored, dimmable LEDs across a 6.92 sq km pilot zone in T Nagar, commissioned around 2018-2019 with automatic fault-ticketing intended to replace citizen-reported outages. The city separately converted roughly 70% of its streetlights citywide to plain, non-monitored LEDs under an earlier stage of the same programme. No public source found confirms the SCADA monitoring layer was ever extended beyond the T Nagar pilot, and an August 2025 Corporation survey that found more than 40,000 dysfunctional streetlights citywide made no mention of automated fault detection — evidence that the sensor layer stayed a single-neighbourhood pilot while most of the city still relies on manual reporting.
