How Hyderabad got smart

The metro came first, and it set the pattern. Hyderabad Metro opened in November 2017 as one of the first elevated metro systems in India built on communications-based train control rather than older fixed-block signalling, letting the operations control centre supervise train separation and brake automatically if a driver errs. It runs in automatic train operation mode — with two drivers on board per train. The technology can support driverless running and the operator has not switched it on, which makes the operating decision, not the procurement, the thing that determines what a rider actually experiences.
